The Richard R. Jowell Family

Richard Radcliff Jowell, born in South Carolina in 1808, came to Jacksonville about 1845. This same year, Nancy Elzira Hague, a native of Lincoln County, Tennessee, arrived here at the age of thirteen. In 1850, Richard R. Jowell and Nancy E. Hague were married. A year later, the first of their fourteen children was born.

The home of the Jowell family was located on Carey Lake Road, west of town. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in old Jacksonville. In 19870 and 1871, he served as Grand Master. On November 2, 1871, Richard Radcliff Jowell died.

Presently there are five grandchildren residing in Jacksonville and vicinity. They are William Hague Jowell, Mrs. Emmit Smith, Mrs. Laura Davis, C. H. Jowell and Mrs. Elsie Jowell (C. C.) Williams. Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Jowell have many great-grandchildren, one is C. C. Jowell of Jacksonville.

Most of the children of Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Jowell, and many of their descendants, have engaged in the lumber business in this area.
