J.M. Brittain and his brother, Frank, came to Texas in 1881. Both brothers were doctors. Frank opened his practice in Jacksonville and J.M. in the Griffin Community. When Frank moved away (about 1890), J.M. took over the office in Jacksonville. J.M. died in 1910 at the age of 80.

Dr. Brittain's office was located at the corner of Main and Commerce Streets above the Ragsdale Bros. store (a ready-to-wear store).
