The Andrew Searcy Family
Facts from Minnie Viola Thames Searcy
The Searcys moved to the Jacksonville area because Minnie Searcy's grandmother, Melvina Johnson, lived here, her husband having been killed in the Civil War. Mrs. Johnson lived near Jacksonville with her son, Johnny Johnson, a farmer who owned 1,400 acres in the Black Jack community. And Minnie had other relatives—two brothers, John William Thames and J. M. Thames. Each brother had five children, and many live in this area.
When Andrew J. Searcy and his wife, Minnie Viola, came to Texas they had been married only a short time. It was 1910 and they farmed just east of town with crops of cotton, corn, peanuts, peas and some cattle. They moved into town in 1920 so that their son, Cecil, could attend school.
The Searcys always have been members of the First Baptist Church since moving to Jacksonville, and Mrs. Searcy is a long-time member of the Missionary Society. She lives on Henderson Street.
Andrew Searcy died in 1945, while his son was serving overseas in World War II. Cecil now lives in Houston and has one son.
