The George John Haberle Family

Facts by Herschel Haberle

On November 20, 1892, George John Haberle and Anna Eugenia Lawrence were married. She was a daughter of L. J. (Uncle Jack) and Mary Lawrence, and he had come to Jacksonville in 1890 with his family. His parents were Thomas and Mary Ann Durr Haberle, natives of Germany, who had met and married in America in 1854.

George Haberle was associated with the first business established by members of the Aber and Haberle families. This was a brick kiln in which mud brick were made and used in many of the old buildings still standing in Jacksonville.

Edgar Aber was a building contractor and George Haberle helped make the brick and lay them in such buildings as the present A-B Apartment on East Rusk, which was the Jacksonville public school, the old Alexander College, Baptist College and others. When the old main building of Jacksonville Baptist College was dismantled, the bricks were used in Thompson Funeral Home on Corinth Road. Later, the Aber Factory went into manufacture of boxes, crates and baskets.

Mr. and Mrs. George Haberle were parents of six children who lived to maturity.

Lucile (Mrs. A.P. Addie Heermans) was born May 6, 1894. She and her husband are both deceased, and their two children, Ray Heermans of Lufkin, and Adeline (Howard) of Houston, survive.

Doris (Mrs. Vergel Ward) was born in 1903, and sons, Max and Don, live in Houston. Barry died while in the service of his country.

Maurine (Mrs. Ralph Durrett) was born in 1906, and her son, Windel, lives in Longview, and daughter, Lanel (Mrs. Jimmy Hays) resides in Houston.

Elise (Mrs. Larry Gardner) born in 1907, lives in Beaumont, and is the mother of three sons, Larry of Nederland, Lynn of Beaumont, and Danny of San Antonio.

Herschel C. Haberle was born in 1897, and he and Bertha Wiggins (deceased) were married in 1925. They were parents of a son, Jerald N. (Jerry), who resides in Garland. H.C. Haberle was in business in Jacksonville for many years before his retirement. He operated a shoe repair shop and later an independent gasoline distribution business. For a number of years, he was consignee for a large oil company.

Lawrence B. Haberle (deceased) was born in 1895. He married Ethel Cunningham and they were parents of three children. A son, Jack, was killed in an automobile accident. Their daughter, Jean (Mrs. Hal Coley), lives in Dallas, and a son, David L. Haberle, served as Jacksonville postmaster from January, 1946, to March, 1953.

Lawrence Haberle was engaged in oil and iron ore industries. He was an active civic worker, serving on the Jacksonville City Council, and as chief of the volunteer fire department from 1930 to 1933.
