The George Gunter Family

Facts by Edwin Gunter

George Edward Gunter came to Jacksonville in 1912 from the community of Atoy, Cherokee County. His father, Clab Gunter, was a native of Nacogdoches County, who had moved to Atoy in 1870.

In 1917, George Gunter married Daisy Carnes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Carnes of Jacksonville. To this union were born two sons, Edwin Dale and George Gunter, Jr. George owns and operates several theatres in Texas. Edwin owns two nursing homes in Jacksonville. He is the father of Edwin Dale Gunter, Jr., Captain, USAF, a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. His son is Edwin Dale Gunter, III.

George Edward Gunter helped build the first road between Jacksonville and Dialville. He was a schoolteacher at Primrose and also owned and operated a truck line. During the development of the East Texas oil field, he was a Special Texas Ranger. G. E. Gunter, (deceased) was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
