The Sam A. Cobb, Sr., Family

Facts by Sam A. Cobb

Sam A. Cobb, Sr., with his wife, Ora McCall Cobb, moved to Jacksonville in 1912. They came from Alto, Cherokee County, Texas.

Mr. Cobb established the Sam A. Cobb Lumber Company on Alabama Avenue. Later, he formed a partnership with W. W. Holman and changed the firm name to Cobb-Holman Lumber Company.

Mr. Cobb served as mayor of Jacksonville in 1919. In 1921, when the Rotary Club was organized, he became a charter member. He was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, and served during World War II as chairman of the Draft Board, until his death in 1943.

Mr. and Mrs. Cobb were parents of four children, two dying as infants. A daughter, Mary Alice, died in 1928. Their son, Sam A. Cobb, in the insurance business in Jacksonville from 1937 until his retirement in 1970, served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1945.

Mr. and Mrs. Cobb resided in their stately home at 501 El Paso Street. Mrs. Cobb lived there until her death, in 1965.

Sam A. Cobb married Shannon Wade, and they have two sons, John Wade Cobb and Sam A. Cobb. All are residents of Jacksonville.
