The M. B. Canon Family
Menon Bryan Canon was in the first class graduating from The University of Texas Medical School in Galveston in 1896. He came to Jacksonville in 1908 to join Dr. Guinn in the first hospital in Jacksonville. It was located at Rusk and Main streets on the present site of Abell's pharmacy. (The Dr. Guinn home was the first location of the Cherokee Sanitarium).
When the Guinn hospital was closed, Dr. Canon joined the staff of Newburn's Hospital. He continued active practice in Jacksonville until his retirement in 1952, four years before his death.
Mrs. Canon was a native of Moscow, Texas, and they were married there in 1899. When they came to Jacksonville in 1908, Clayton, Myron and Crystal comprised the family. Catherine (Tiny) and Menon were born here. The two sons are now deceased, Crystal Canon is associate professor of speech at Lamar University, Beaumont. Tiny, an attorney, is Mrs. Mac Brown of Henderson and Menon (Mrs. Elwood Brown) lives in Grand Saline. Mrs. Canon lived until age 95 and died in December, 1971.
