Cherokee, &c.–There will be a barbacue [sic] and mass meeting of the democracy of Cherokee and the neighboring counties, at Jacksonville, on the fourth day of October next, as we learn from the Cherokee Sentinel, of the fifteenth instant.
San Antonio Ledger, 29 Sep 1855
Mass Barbecue at Jacksonville,
Cherokee County.
We learn that this mass meeting of the Democracy was a large and enthusiastic assemblage, notwithstanding a heavy fall of rain during the day of the 4th. The principal speakers were R. B. Hubbard, Esq., of Tyler; Col. L. T. Wigfall, of Marshall; Hon. F. W. Bowden, of Henderson, and finally on the 5th inst., the Hon. T. J. Rusk and Mr. Graham, of Henderson.
The effects of this meeting must awaken the Democracy far and near. The rally of such men, at a crisis like the present will cause every member of the party to feel the importance of the coming struggle of 1856. With such a galaxy of eloquent champions of the Democracy, the occasion was one of the deepest interest. It will send a chill of enthusiasm along the whole line of the party in eastern Texas.
